Wrightsville Beach. A Wilmington-based communications company is recruiting Wrightsville Beach businesses and residences to participate in a wireless Internet project. Qualifying candidates will receive free high-speed Internet for participating.
Comspeco.net, a division of Communication Specialists Company, has been quietly establishing wireless Internet points of presence, or “hotspots” in Wilmington, Carolina, Topsail and Wrightsville Beaches since 2001. In 2009, Comspeco.net purchased the Wrightsville Beach wireless Internet infrastructure from Outer Banks-based company, Surfmasters, and has begun replacing the equipment and upgrading the service.
By recruiting home owners and businesses who want free Internet in exchange for being a node in its network, Comspeco.net has been building out its wireless infrastructure in Carolina Beach since 2004. Kim Lewis, owner of Carolina Beach bar The Last Resort, has been participating since 2007. “Not only do we get free high-speed Internet in our unit, so do our renters,” Lewis said. “Technical support is excellent. We’re not just another customer… we’re a part of the network. If something does go wrong, it is fixed immediately,” Lewis said.
Comspeco.net Account Manager Marilyn Darrow says the Internet signal currently covers about 75% of Carolina Beach and its waterways, and about 65% of Wrightsville Beach and its waterways, but that they want to improve the reputation left behind by Surfmasters. “The problem with the infrastructure we purchased in Wrightsville Beach is the height and location of the antennas. The result is unacceptable service levels to certain areas,” Darrow explains.
To change all that, Comspeco.net is looking for homes and/or businesses in Wrightsville Beach to participate in the upgrade project. “Once selected, these participants will receive free high-speed Internet with absolutely no investment by the home owner or business for up to a year … and probably longer,” Darrow said.
“We’re especially interested in taller homes and businesses that are near hotels and vacation rentals,” Darrow said. Anyone interested should contact Communication Specialists between 9 am and 5 pm Monday through Friday at 910-791-9774.
